出生於愛爾蘭，成長於加拿大，足跡遍及亞洲與非洲偏遠地區。定期為《週日時報》和《每日電訊報》撰文，三度獲頒年度旅行作家獎。作品包括記載追溯尼羅河源頭之旅的《尼羅河魔鬼》（Old Serpent Nile），及經由絲路橫越中國的旅程故事《天堂的邊境》（Frontiers of Heaven）。史都華是極少數兩度榮獲湯瑪士．庫克∕每日電訊報旅行文學獎的作家，得獎作品為《天堂的邊境》和《馬背上的游牧國度》。史都華為英國皇家文學協會會員，現居倫敦。
